World Association of the Major metropolises
The initiative Le 8ème Jour pursues its efforts to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities in Brussels, helping to change the perception of disabilities, moving away from exclusion towards integration and, ultimately, inclusion. Le 8ème Jour proposes an innovative and economically viable housing solution for people with intellectual disabilities.
Le 8ème Jour provides access to 36 apartments, divided between four residences, located in a secure urban environment thanks to the assistance lent to 30 disabled people by five social workers and the presence of six supportive neighbours who reside in the buildings in the evening and at weekends. The association Le 8ème Jour plays host to 30 residents with different forms of intellectual disability in its four residences at the heart of the city centre. Autonomous living in the city is important for people with disabilities, where they can enjoy access to the same services as every other citizen. Though the project design dates back to the year 2000, the first residents were integrated into Le 8ème Jour in May 2002. The association’s overarching goal is to enable people with intellectual disabilities to live autonomously. Le 8ème Jour allows them to choose their lifestyle, to enjoy access to services adapted to their disabilities and to avoid becoming isolated or being discriminated against.
