“Pedalea por Bogotá” was launched as a government initiative to promote the daily use of bicycles in Bogotá as a recreational and healthy strategy to mitigate climate change, traffic congestion and people’s sedentary lifestyle.
The project’s overall objective is to promote healthy behaviour and lifestyle habits across the various sectors of society in Bogotá, encouraging the use of bicycles and thereby enhancing connections between its members and day-to-day activities, building environments of respect and inclusion that raise the quality of life. It is based on four strategies: 1. Cycle lanes, 2. Going to school by bicycle, 3. Cycling events, 4. Financial stimuli for pro-cycling initiatives, set in motion by the IDRD (District Institute for Recreation and Sport). Said project also features two specific goals: on the one hand, to generate regular activities that allow fun-educational activities related to cycling and its environment to be developed; and, on the other hand, to reward and promote citizen initiatives related to bicycle use, aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life.
